2016 Special Report

Developing the 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan

Ontario's Environmental Commissioner, Dr. Dianne Saxe, tabled Developing the 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on December 6, 2016.

This Special Report summarizes key recommendations made by the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO) over the years regarding energy planning, and updates these recommendations in the context of the Ministry of Energy’s 2017 long-term energy planning process.

These recommendations focus on the need for the Long-Term Energy Plan to:

  • Enable Ontario to meet its climate change targets;
  • Consider the environmental impacts of energy resources on our air, water and land;
  • Put conservation first;
  • Apply evidence-based decision making; and
  • Provide opportunities for meaningful public participation.
